Vaginal surgery is one of the cosmetic surgeries with a rapid increase in popularity in western societies. The fact that it ranks among the most in-demand plastic surgeries is confirmed by the statistics. Of course, the aesthetic improvement of the sensitive area and the female body that it ensures is undoubtable. But there is a key question about this procedure that concerns women. How much is the sensitivity of the area and, therefore, sexual arousal affected by the surgery?
Dr. Nikos Naoum, gynecologist, specialist in Aesthetic and Interventional Gynecology, who has performed many surgeries of this type in the last decade, answers this question.
What do women think is Vaginal Surgery?
Most women think that vaginal surgery is a cosmetic surgery that offers a woman immediate improvement of the appearance of the sensitive area and her relationship with her body. This is true, indeed, as women mainly visit our clinic for aesthetic reasons, since the peculiarities of their vagina undermine their sexual confidence or do not even allow them to wear the underwear they want or tight clothes, sportswear, leggings or swimwear. They think this improvement of the aesthetic image of the area is the only reason that ensures an improvement in their sexual life as well. It is well known that a woman’s sexual confidence is directly related to how she feels about her body. And if she is not satisfied with the image of her vagina, her sexuality can be affected and even blocked. Especially when there are either anatomical peculiarities in the area or relaxation, due to the wear and tear of time or normal births. But, as Dr. Naoum explains, it is true that with vaginal surgery we can easily make an aesthetically perfect vagina, by reducing, for instance, the size of the hypertrophic vaginal lips. All this is done with a procedure that does not take more than an hour, with the use of a special surgical laser. We can also restore the lost volume and relaxation of the area, or even correct the color of the skin, which is associated with a more attractive and youthful appearance of the area. Vaginal surgery, however, does not just provide a better aesthetic image.
What it actually achieves
As Dr. Naoum points out, vaginal surgery is not performed only for aesthetic reasons. It can solve functional problems in everyday life as well as in sexual life. For example, hypertrophic vaginal lips can cause pain due to friction or even difficulty having sex. With vaginal surgery, excess tissue in the area, which can make various aspects of a woman’s life difficult, is removed. The question, however, is what exactly is sex like after a vaginal surgery.
It affects the sensitivity of the area
Most women know that the area is full of nerve endings, responsible for arousal and irritation during sex. They often worry about a possible injury of the nerves in the area, which could result in reduced sensitivity, as Dr. Naoum explains. He adds: “The truth is that they are right about that. Indeed, there is a risk if the operation is performed by a surgeon who is not specialized in this field. In fact, we have seen really bad results from low quality operations. A doctor who specializes in this type of surgery knows how to perform an operation in the area without injuring or affecting the nerves or nerve endings. Therefore, each patient should look for and turn to the right specialist. So, not only will the sensitivity of the area not be reduced, but it will be preserved as before. Here I would like to point out that there is a possibility of increased sexual arousal after the surgery and I will explain why.
How can sensitivity increase?
As Dr. Naoum explains, the tissue removed from the labia majora has no nerve endings. In fact, its existence can make the stimulation of the area difficult. Also, for some women, excess tissue covers the clitoris (which is the main organ of sexual arousal for a woman). This can contribute to decreased sexual sensitivity or difficulty in arousal. However, this problem can be easily corrected, since, in the context of a vaginal surgery, we can operate the clitoris as well. Thus, the patient is liberated of this excess skin, while both the sensitivity of the area and its orgasmic ability are improved.
Sex after Vaginal Surgery
It’s definitely better. First because the aesthetic improvement of the vagina boosts a woman’s self-confidence, and she immediately feels more relaxed, which facilitates her sexual expression and enjoyment. In addition, as we said, the area is freed from excess tissue. And this can enhance sensitivity, facilitating both stimulation and orgasmic climax.
Dr. Naoum mentions: “I would say, then, that any concern about the sensitivity of the area after the surgery is unfounded, as long as the patient has addressed a specialized cosmetic gynecologist and a properly equipped and certified clinic. Sensitivity is certainly not threatened by a vaginal surgery. On the contrary, it either remains as it was or even improves. Therefore, after recovery time, greater sexual satisfaction is expected. This means a better quality of sex life and a more intense love affair for the couple.
About recovery time
We remind you that the final result of a vaginal surgery is visible in about 20 days time. The patient can return home the same day after the operation and go back to work the next day. She should abstain from sports activities for 7-10 days and from sex for 20 days. On the first day, showers are allowed and sleeping on the back is recommended.
